Lemon Express (Limón Express) - Costa Blanca Tourist train
The Lemon Express is no longer running. See alternative below
Unfortunately the train bogey wheels need maintenance and alteration to fit the new track which is being improved and electrified by FGV the Costa Blanca tram & railway company
The old train has remained in a siding at Benidorm Station covered in graffiti. A 'come back' expected cost of this upgrade is just short of £1,000,000' and the idea has been shelved.
We dont believe ths upgrade will ever take place,
Alternative to the Lemon Express
You can still take the same spectacular journey on the modern tram through the mountains., so jump on a tram for either Benidorm to either Gata de Gorges or go a little further to Denia for a day out. The trams offer an hourly service.
The journey can be made from as far south as Alicante , but you will have to change trams at Benidorm. These trams are more frequent, every 30 minutes. You can always have a coffee, drink or snack at Benidorm Station if you have to wait 30 mins.
Buy your ticket at the station booking office of machines on the platform.
Gata de Gorgos
The old Spanish Town of Gata de Gorgos is located on the River Gorgos, up river from Javea on the coast and next to the AP7 East coast Motorway (Autopista del Mediterrani). It is a quaint town with narrow streets and loads of artisan shops selling the local craft products and food.
Gata de Gorgos was the destination of the Lemon Express tourist train
The area is very popular with walkers and there are some stunning walks through the countyside and mountains to the south.
The River Gorgos, also known further upstream as the Jallon, dry in summer, and a raging torrent after winter rains, has formed a deep gorge and a tourist attraction.
The town, Gata, is renowned for
- It's basket weaving and wickerwork craftsmanship using rushes, canes and bamboos.
- Rustic furniture
- Locally grown grapes . Being a grape growing region it also is a wine producing area
- Locally grown almonds, visit in late January to early February to see the almond trees in full blossom, presenting a sea of pink and white flowers.
All these products can be seen in and outside many of shops in the main street and throughout the town.
