Benidorm information about the old town and new town

Benidorm the largest holiday resort in the Mediterranean is situated in the middle of the Costa Blanca (White Coast) Spain.

Benidorm Island
(La Isla de Benidorm)

Take a boat trip to Benidorm Island, ideal for a picnic swimming,snorkel diving and scuba diving. Benidorm Island situated in the middle of the bay and is a bird and marine sanctuary. Some of the boats going to the island are glass bottomed and leave from the harbour.

Old Quarter

Benidorms Old Quarter is situated on the promontory that seperates the 2 main beaches. This origianly was the old fishing village that developed into the tourist mecca that Benidorm has become. The old town has many quaint narrow lanes and alleyways, some unsuitable for tourist coaches.
St James church is prominent in the old quarter.

The promenade

The promenade, the length of both the main beaches. Sit at one of many restaurants, cafes or bars. Sip your favourite drink, have a snack or meal and watch the world go by.

St. James Church
(Iglesia de San Jaime)

St. James, Benidorm's parish church is located in the Old quarter. Profitable tuna fishing helped to pay for the church when building started in 1740. The church is typical of coastal churches with it's white walls and blue tiled roof.

Old Town

Wednesday market with its lively multicultural nature. Here you will find everything from fresh fruit to woolly socks, African wooden carvings to Indian beads and everything in between.

New Town

Sunday market
An antiques market in El Cisnea a permanent centre, buy, sell and exchange a wide range of articles in it's 3,000 square metres of space.

For tourists who do not like lying in the sun on the golden sands, or sitting around the hotel pool bar drinking a few beers or sipping a sangria all day then Benidorm is an ideal centre to visit the inland villages or coastal towns.

Most tour operators operate coach trips. These can be booked on line or through your travel agent. Alternatively go to your re ps welcome meeting where the rep will tell you about the resort, trips and excursions that they organise.

Festivals

January 5th is Twelfth Night and the celebration of the Three Kings.

February 11th to 17th is carnival time and election of the Carnival Queen.

March 15th to 19th is the procession of the Fallas and decorated floats through the streets.

May 11th to 14th
is the Foietes Fiesta with floral offerings.

June 15th to 18th is the religious Corpus-Christi pilgrimage to the Church of the Almudena. 21st to 24th is the religious San Juan Bonfire Festival.

July 13th to 16th is the Local Festival in honour of the patron saint of the sea, the Virgen del Carmen, including an offering to the sea, which takes place in the bay.

September 7th and 8th is the religious pilgrimage to Asturias, fiesta and pilgrimage of the Virgen of Covadonga.

October is the month of celebration. This is the festival of the Moors and Christians.

November. A major celebration held in honour of the Virgen del Sufragio and St. James the Apostle, during the second weekend of the month.

December 8th. Religious celebration of the Immaculate Conception.

December 25th. Christmas Day.

Aiguera Park

Aiguera Park is the largest park in Benidorm, built in central Benidorm, behind the old town. The park transformed a stretch of old riverbed. Enjoy the shade of the trees as you wander through this classic park.

Events are held at the theatre or open air amphitheatre in the warmer months.

Adventure

For the aventourous you can:

Hire Motorbikes from Biker's Escape, Avda de Europa, 22.

Do a 4X4 Jeep Safari with or without a driver included.

 

 

 

Benidorm Beaches

The beaches are on either side of the Old Town headland. Playa De Levante to the North East and  Playa De Poniente to the South West. Both have beautiful golden sand.

See the Sand artists construct fabulous displays in the sand.

The beaches are facing South bathed in sun all day long whilst it shines.

Dogs are not allowed on the beaches.

Playa De Levante

Playa De Levante is in the top ten beaches of the World, so it gets busy (crowded in July August) day and night, its clean white sand attracting the tourists from the high rise hotels that are behind the beach.

Facilities for Banana boat rides, Boat rentals, jet-skis, Parascending rides, Water skiing, pedaloes, windsurfing, scuba-diving and Watersports are available on Levante Beach.

Playa De Poniente

Playa De Poniente is not as central, on the other side of the old town. Another great beach.
Because it is quieter it's good for older people and families with younger children.

Playa Mal Pas

Playa Mal Pas is a smallish cove situated between the 2 main beaches in front of the Benidorm's Old Town headland. The cove can be reached from the harbour or from the Castilla in the Old Town via steps.

Just outside Benidorm are a selection of quieter coves and beaches some popular with nudists and gays.
